How to Have a Great Photo Session with Kids

As a mom and a photographer, I know how unpredictable kids can be—especially when it comes to family photos. One moment, they’re all smiles, and the next, they’re melting down because their sock feels “weird.” I’ve been there! But here’s the secret: the best photos aren’t the ones where everyone is perfectly posed and smiling on cue. The best photos are the ones that capture real moments—the giggles, the curiosity, the chaos, and even the little tantrums that you’ll laugh about years from now.

If you’re getting ready for a session with little ones, here’s my biggest advice: let go of the stress and just enjoy the moment. I promise, I’ve seen it all, and my goal isn’t to get your child to “behave” for the camera—it’s to capture your family’s love and personality just as you are.

One of the best ways to help your child feel comfortable is to let them be themselves. If they want to twirl in their dress, chase butterflies, or make silly faces, let’s do it! I’ll follow their lead and capture those genuine, joy-filled moments that truly showcase their personality. The more we embrace their energy, the more natural and beautiful the photos will be.

Another great tip? Let them bring a favorite toy or stuffed animal. Not only does it help them feel secure, but it also adds a sweet personal touch to your photos. Years from now, you’ll love looking back and remembering the phase when they carried that one teddy bear everywhere or insisted on wearing their superhero cape. These little details are part of their childhood story, and they deserve to be remembered.

Now, to my fellow parents—I know it’s easy to stress over how the kids will act during the session. You want those perfect, frame-worthy photos, and I totally get it. But here’s the thing—kids pick up on our energy. If you’re tense, they’ll feel it too, which can make them more resistant to taking photos. Instead, try to relax, have fun, and trust that I’ll capture the magic. Whether your toddler is giving the best grins or refusing to let go of your leg, I promise there will be beautiful moments worth cherishing.

And let’s not forget—kids are meant to move, explore, and play! If they want to run, jump, or roll in the grass, let them! Some of my favorite images come from those candid, playful moments. Instead of expecting them to sit perfectly still, think of this as a fun experience where your family gets to laugh, snuggle, and just be yourselves.

At the end of the day, the most treasured photos aren’t always the perfectly posed ones. They’re the ones that remind you of this season of life—the silly faces, the wild energy, even the little pouty moments. One day, you’ll look back and realize that these were the days you’d give anything to relive, just for a moment.

So let’s make it fun, let’s make it real, and let’s capture memories that will mean the world to you years from now. If you’re ready to book your session, I’d love to be a part of your story!
